Using adjustable dumbbells for your exercise routines is one of the best forms of resistance available. They can be used to build up your muscle mass, increase your strength, and increase your flexibility. And it can do all of these things while taking up a minimum amount of space in your apartment or exercise room. Dumbbells, in one form of another, have been around for decades. Early dumbbells were fixed-weight pieces of equipment. If you wanted to exercise with varying weight requirements, you had to have multiple sets of dumbbells.
As companies became serious about marketing to the fitness crowd, they came up with adjustable dumbbells. These were dumbbells consisting of a metal rod. And on each end you could place varying amounts of weights up to the amount that you needed. Advantages of Adjustable DumbbellsThe advantage of this to the consumer is two-fold. One, buying dumbbells like this is generally cheaper than buying multiple sets of dumbbells. And, two, the space requirements for adjustable dumbbells is usually less than that of fixed-weight dumbbells.
Disadvantages of Adjustable DumbbellsBut, adjustable dumbbells have their disadvantages as well. The primary disadvantage is that it can be a real inconvenience to add and/or remove plates from the dumbbell rod. In fact, one reason that so many people start, and then stop, their fitness routine is simply because of the hassle of continually having to change the plates. A second disadvantage of many brands of adjustable dumbbells is the unreliability of the locking clamps that hold the plate onto the rod. Sometimes they aren't locked properly and will fall off in the middle of a routine. In the more serious cases, they can actually hurt someone. Newer adjustable dumbbells, however, such as the Bowflex dumbbells and PowerBlock dumbbells have mostly resolved these issues. These remain some of the best adjustable dumbbells on the market today.
